The Nervous System!

Ashley & Abbie

The Nervous System is the network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. The main control of the nervous system is the brain. It tells everything what to do. The nervous system helps maintain homeostasis, helps you receive information and respond to information.

Parts Of The Nervous System

• Cerebrum - the part of the brain that interprets input from the senses, controls movement and carries out complex mental processes
• Cerebellum - the part of the brain that coordinates the actions of the muscles and helps maintain balance
• Brain Stem - the part of the brain that lies between the cerebellum and spinal cord and controls the body's involuntary actions

Spinal Cord
• Neuron - a cell that carries information through the nervous system

Injuries Of The System

A bruise like injury of the brain. It occurs when the soft tissue of the brain collides against the skull. Concussions can happen when you bump your head in a hard fall, a car accident or a contact sport. Affects of a concussion are heard aches, but the tissue heals by itself. With more serious injuries, you may lose consciousness, have minor confusion or feel drowsy after the injury.

Spinal Cord Injury
• This type of injury occurs when the spinal cord is cut or crushed. When this happens, the axons in the injured section are damaged, which means the impulses can't pass through them. This kind of injury usually causes paralysis, which is loss of the movement in some part of the body. Car crashes are the most common cause of spinal cord injuries.

Stimulus - Any change or signal to the environment that can make an organism react.
Response - What your body does in reaction to a stimulus. (When you swat a fly)
Neurons - Cells that carry information through your nervous system. Also known as nerve cells.
Nerve Impulse - The message that a neuron carries.
Dendrite - A threadlike extension of a neuron carries nerve impulses toward the cell body.
Axon - A threadlike extension of the nerve that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body.
Nerve - A bundle of nerve fibers.
Synapse - The junction where one neuron can transfer an impulse to another structure.
