The Adventures Of The Respiratory System

The respiratory system not only helps you breathe, but since it works with the cardivascular system it helps you move also. Air is necessary for everything you do. The respiratory system also gets rid of wastes. When you breathe in you also breathe in other substances other than oxygen, you have to get rid of these wastes so they exit your body when you breathe out. Have you ever seen the condensation on a window? Well, when you breathe on it the condensation is the water vapor you are letting out.



Path Of Air

When you breathe in air it goes through your nose and into your pharynx (throat). Then it goes down the trachea (windpipe). After it travels down the trachea it goes into the bronchi which are the passages that direct the air into the lungs which are the main organs in the respiratory system. The air goes into either the left of right lung from the bronchi and each bronchus divides into smaller and smaller tubes which resembles branches on a tree. Alveoli, which resembles grapes, are found at the end of the small tubes. The alveoli are tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gases between air and blood.then the gas exchange happens. The gas exchange is a process when the air enters the alveolus, oxygen passes through the wall of the alveolus and then through the capillary wall into the blood. Carbon dioxide and water pass from the blood into the alveoli.

How You Breathe

Breathing is controlled by muscles. the picture below shows those muscles. As you can see the lungs are surrounded by ribs, which have muscles attached to them. The diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle which is also a part of breathing. When you inhale the muscles contract, which lifts the chest wall up and out. the diaphragm moves downward while also contracting. There is now a difference in air pressure between the inside of your lungs and the outside . Because of this difference in air pressure air rushes into your chest. When you exhale the ribs muscles and diaphragm relax. The chest cavity size also reduces. This decrease in size squeezes air out of the lungs.
